Natural lifestyle photography vs. posed portraits

Feb 13, 2023 | Family Photography

When it comes to your London Family Photoshoot, there are two main styles of photography to choose from: candid lifestyle photography or posed portraits. Both styles have their own unique characteristics, and the one that’s right for you will depend on your family’s preferences, the type of memories you want to capture and perhaps even the occasion.

Lifestyle Photography

Candid family photography, also known as lifestyle photography, focuses on capturing natural and unplanned moments. Lifestyle family photography is all about capturing natural, authentic moments that showcase the unique personalities and connections within a family. This type of photography typically takes place in a location that is meaningful to the family, such as their home or even a favourite park. The photographer will focus on capturing every day moments of laughter, play, and interaction between family members.

As a London family photographer, this is my favourite approach and I will take photographs of your family as they interact and play together, giving only subtle direction for poses to ensure we capture everyone at their best. This style of photography is great for documenting the essence of your family and results in beautiful, timeless images using a storytelling manner.

Posed Portraits

On the other hand, posed family photography is more formal. The photographer will carefully pose and direct the family to create a specific look or composition. The resulting photos are typically more structured, with everyone looking towards the camera and positioned in a deliberate way. While posed photos may lack the spontaneity of lifestyle photography, they can be a beautiful way to capture important milestones and create great family portraits.

The vast majority of my family photography clients approach me for lifestyle images, but may ask for a handful of more posed photos as part of the overall session. I will then gently direct and position you and your loved ones, creating somewhat more classic family portraits.

When deciding which style of family photography in London is right for you, consider the following:

What style of photography are you most drawn towards?

When deciding between lifestyle family photography and posed portraits, it’s important to consider your personal style and preferences. If you prefer a more relaxed and natural look, lifestyle photography may be the better choice for you. It allows for more freedom and spontaneity, resulting in photos that feel authentic and unforced. If you’re looking to capture real emotions and your family’s personalities in beautiful and raw images, candid lifestyle photography is right for your London Family Photoshoot

Who are these images for?

You are most likely planning a photoshoot to enjoy the photos around your own home. However, you may also plan to share some images with the grandparents and wider family. They will often enjoy some more posed images which we can incorporate into our shoot together.

Can’t decide?

It’s important to discuss your options with your photographer and consider the occasion, location, and overall vibe you’re looking for in order to make the best decision for you and your family.
